The University Hospital Bonn is planning to merge its biomedical facilities at its Venusberg site, and the BMZ II construction project is the second step towards this goal.
The BMZ II – whose building will function as a gateway to the University Hospital Bonn – will house research areas (laboratories and offices) as well as ‘core facilities’ (technical platforms). The entrance area will also incorporate a science forum for interested members of the public.
The plan is for a building with three full floors plus a recessed upper floor facing the Sigmund-Freud-Strasse to mediate between the height of the BMZ I laboratory building and the housing development which lies opposite. The spatial boundaries of the neighbouring laboratory building BMZ I and the angled position of Sigmund-Freud-Strasse will be adopted to create a ‘pebble-shaped’ structure and to reduce the building's enveloping surface to a minimum with this building form.
The main entrance faces the street and provides access to the university’s internal departments. In the entrance area the façade is slightly recessed to create a canopied main access. A circumferential reinforced concrete cantilever plate subdivides the façade floor-by-floor. Coloured glass pilaster strips and ceramic elements for visual segmentation are fitted in alternating rhythm between the individual window elements.
